Ducati presented the new Multistrada V4 to the world during the first episode of the Ducati World Première web series.
Multistrada has a name that alone contains an ambitious promise to keep: the ability to offer great versatility. In fact, it was born with the intention of being a sporty but comfortable bike, able to face with safety and solidity any road condition, on asphalt and on dirt roads.
In 18 years prodotte more than 110,000 units have been produced and since its inception, in 2003, it has been able to evolve, expanding its scope of use. The first Multistrada was a sports bike, with good torque and mainly suitable for road use. The 2010 version was the first “four bikes in one”, the first motorcycle in the world equipped with Riding Mode. In 2015, the first engine equipped with a double phase variator was presented, which improved the dispensing fluidity.
The fourth generation of Multistrada is an even more performance bike, but still easier to ride. More robust and at the same time lighter. More versatile and comfortable, but effective in any driving condition. In other words, Ducati wanted the Multistrada V4 to be the best “Multi” ever. I mean, more multi-street than ever before.
The Multistrada V4 is “Sport” because it is light and compact, has 170 hp, electronic aids from MotoGP and a bike with agile altitudes for exhilarating and effective driving in the mix. It is “Touring” thanks to the main maintenance intervals fixed every 60,000 km,the obsessive care aimed at driving comfort, radar systems (the first motorcycle in the world to have both front and rear), the cartographic navigator viewable on the dashboard and cornering lights. It is “Enduro” thanks to excellent off-road capabilities, electronic suspension, fluidity of dispensing and gearing. It is “Urban” because it guarantees great ease of use at low speeds, but also thanks to the connectivity of the smartphone and the careful study aimed at thermal comfort. That’s why dominating all the streets has never been easier.
The design work done on the Multistrada V4 is extremely functional to its technical soul and has led to a solid, robust, but still refined aesthetic result. Ducati designers have worked on the proportions and compactness of the motorcycle body within the interasse, in order to favor the perfect combination of shape and function. This fact can be immediately noticed by the unbalanced volumes on the front with muscular but sexy lines to integrate the 22-litertank, which are combined with the slender rear that allows an optimal driving position even standing in off-road sections. The study of aerodynamic flows has been oriented to ensure the maximum possible comfort to the rider.
The engine is the true heart of this bike: the V4 Granturismo. Light (66.7 kg) and compact, it has a lot of grit but is very soft and fluid at low speeds, with a lot of back to the middle and really exciting at highs. The V4 Granturismo has a displacement of 1,158 cm3
and delivers 170 hp (125 kW) at 10,500 rpm with a maximum torque of 125 Nm (12.7 kgm) at 8,750 rpm. In addition, the adoption of this engine allows a significant lengthening of maintenance intervals: in the Multistrada V4 the oil change is provided every 15,000 km, while the control and possible adjustment of the valve game is required every 60,000 km. No motorcycle in production goes that far.
The V4 Multistrada electronic package is the state-of-the-art in the motorcycle industry for safety, comfort, performance and connectivity. The inertial platform (IMU) manages the operation of ABS Cornering, Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), here in cornering version and, on the Multistrada V4 S, the Cornering Lights (DCL).
Also on the Multistrada V4 S there is also as standard vehicle hold control (VHC),which makes it easy to restart on sloping roads. On the Multistrada V4 S, the inertial platform also continuously dialogues with the Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) semi-active suspension control system with Autoleveling function.
With the Multistrada V4 Ducati also introduces an absolute preview in the world of motorcycles: the revolutionary front and rear radar system, which allows the use of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). Radars are advanced aid systems that Ducati has developed together with a top-level technological partner such as Bosch, and are able to support and make driving more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality around the bike.
The Multistrada V4 is equipped with a monocoque aluminum frame, 19-inch front wheel and two-arm swingarm, capable of housing spoked wheels. It has a low wheel length (1,567 mm), a front of the sporty altitudes, suspension with great travel (170 mm the front wheel stroke and 180 mm the rear one), ground light of 220 mm and a dry weight of 215 kg. All this allows the Multistrada V4 to be intuitive and effective between corners such as a real Ducati and at the same time easy to drive and versatile for both road and off-road use.
With the aim of making long motorway transfers more comfortable, ducati engineers have paid great attention in the design and development phase to what in the car world is called Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH),that is, the measurement of the overall comfort level of the vehicle.
In this sense, a careful aerodynamic study was carried out, also carried out in the wind tunnel, to obtain the best air protection of the rider and passenger, reduce rustle and remove from the rider’s legs the heat coming from the engine. The result is a new-shaped plexiglass, adjustable in height with a single finger, associated with two side deflectors. The shapes of the hand-to-hand and the parts most exposed to air have been studied in detail, as well as the “sound”, polite but always present and by the Ducati timbre, of the engine. The V4 Granturismo engine also adopts the strategy of deactivating the rear bank to a minimum. In this way, when the bike is stationary at traffic lights, the rear bank deactivates (there is no combustion in the cylinders), improving the thermal comfort of the rider and passenger thanks to lowering temperatures and reducing consumption.
The Multistrada V4 has many different configuration possibilities to meet the needs of the most diverse customers. The standard V4 model is available in red and represents the version dedicated to those who love the 170 hp engine and the 215 kg weight.
The central model of the range, the V4 S,is available, in addition to red, in the color “Aviator Grey”. The Ducati Multistrada V4 S can be ordered with both alloy wheels and ray rims. For this bike Ducati has thought of a new package of configurations that can be ordered directly from the factory (Essential, Travel, Radar, Performance, Full). You can already view all configuration options in the dedicated section of the Ducati site.
The third version is the Multistrada V4 S Sport, which offers a particularly gritty dedicated livery and the standard Performance package with Akrapovič exhaust and carbon front fender.
The new Multistrada V4 will be available in Ducati dealers from the end of November.
