Design
Since its launch, SuperSport has received the consent of the international public, also winning the most beautiful motorcycle award of EICMA 2016. The strengths of ducati road sports have always been the dynamic style, the visual compactness of the volumes and the elegance of the lines with proportions and volumes typical of panigale sports cars. Four years later, the Ducati Style Center intervened by evolving its design, without distorting its concept. The new SuperSport 950, thanks to the new fairings, acquires more sportsmanship and fluidity of the shapes, as well as a strong and decisive appeal to the Panigale V4 thanks to the new full-LED projector and the new side air vents.
The completely redesigned fairings are the new elements that most of all increase the dynamism of the SuperSport 950. The side view is enriched with elegant vents for hot air coming from the water radiator reminiscent of the double extractor of the Panigale V4 models. The extractors also act as aesthetic covers and close on the frame while remaining tight to accentuate the feeling of tight motion on the hips. The lower hull now extends to the side silencer by concealing the mechanics and visually recalling the track bikes.
The fairings are combined with the sculptural tank through muscular shoulders that frame the beam frame, while integrating frontally with the projector through a pair of fins that support it and that at the same time direct fresh air towards two side openings, which vent on the rider’s legs improving their thermal comfort.
The front view is dominated by the new full-LED daytime light projector, Daytime Running Light (DRL), which clearly recalls the bright and sharp signature of the Panigale V4. The DRL has a refined realization with a little opaline that diffuses light evenly. The projector is completed by two two two-function LED modules for dipped-beam and dazzling that allow you to have a symmetrical “look” with lights on. The two modules are recessed in a frame with a brilliant finish that makes this technological component unique.
The SuperSport 950 dome, low to create a squealing and dynamic line, connects centrally to the tank bringing the body color all the way into the cockpit, with a modern design that houses the new full-TFT dashboard in color. Aerodynamic protection is guaranteed by a sporty plexiglas, adjustable in height on two positions.
The unique saddle for rider and passenger with the two portions bordered by contrasting seams has been revised to increase seating comfort, this modification is marked by a new sporty coating.
The side silencer is compact, with two overlapping outputs, its shape and low position enhance the dynamism of the tail, leaving completely on sight the “Y” design of the spokes of the rear rim, embellished like the front one.
Ergonomics
To combine comfort and versatility, while ensuring a sporty driving conduct, a lot of attention was paid to the ergonomic triangle, aerodynamic protection and the freedom of movement of the driver. The saddle, in one piece, with the rider area 810 mm from the ground (which becomes 790 mm by mounting the low saddle available as an accessory), allows you to easily rest your feet on the ground. The height at which the semi-manubri are positioned is such as to assume a position of sporty driving without overloading the wrists, while the platforms are placed in such a way as not to strain the knees, while ensuring maximum control.
The plexiglas, adjustable in height on two positions with an excursion of 50 mm, allows the necessary protection from the air at motorway speeds. This protection can be increased by mounting the larger fumè plexiglas, available as an accessory. The pilot platforms, separated from the passenger ones, together with a compact side exhaust silencer, give maximum freedom of movement in the saddle.
This driving position is appreciated in daily use and medium-duration travel, and is a guarantee of fun in sports driving when the pace goes up.
The saddle, revised in the padding, improves comfort in road use. The improvement of riding comfort also passes through the new most effective fenders, which shield the exhaust manifolds and the outflows of fresh air on the rider’s legs obtained in the fairings.
The portion of the saddle reserved for the passenger is well spaced from the platforms and is adequately padded. To increase comfort, it is possible to choose from the Ducati Performance accessories range a saddle with greater padding (+25 mm) for rider and passenger, suitable for longer journeys, and the external passenger handles, which offer a more ergonomic grip than the standard ones integrated into the saddle.
Testastretta engine 11° Euro 5
The SuperSport 950 is powered by the Ducati Testastretta 11° 937 cm3twin-cylinder, appreciated for its dispensing and response to the throttle controls that make it the perfect engine for a road sports car.
The SuperSport 950’s 11th Test has been revised to comply with Euro 5 homologation. However, the interventions to the exhaust system and the engine control system have not changed its character and the maximum values of power and torque, which are confirmed respectively by 110 hp at 9,000 rpm and 93 Nm at 6,500 rpm respectively.
The engine breathes thanks to butterfly bodies with a diameter of 53 mm controlled by a full Ride-by-Wire system. It has four valves per cylinder, secondary air system, liquid cooling, compression ratio of 12.6:1, reaming and running measurements of 94 and 67.5 mm respectively.
The exhaust system has 54 mm diameter outer diameter ducts that draw a 2-1-2 type lay-out with lower chair attached to a side silencer with two superimposed exits of extremely compact size.
To increase engine performance, or simply for a sporty look, two Akrapovic titanium implants are available as accessories®: a homologated exhaust with carbon fiber paracalore and a racing exhaust that reduces the weight by – 4.6 kg and increases power at medium speeds by + 5%.
The gearbox is six-speed with specific gear sensor, which allows you to equip the SuperSport 950 range as standard with the advanced Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) up/down EVO. The clutch is oil bath with enslavement and anti-hopping system and is operated by the new hydraulic control with self-purging radial pump equipped with adjustable lever. The anti-hopping function intervenes when the torque at the wheel has a contrary action and achieves a reduction in pressure on the discs that allows to maintain the stability of the vehicle in aggressive climbs typical of sports driving.
The Ducati twin-cylinder has maintenance intervals every 15,000 km, or 12 months, with valve game control every 30,000 km.
Power and torque curves
The Ducati Testastretta 11° twin-cylinder develops a full and full-bodied torque curve throughout the entire range of use, for a response always ready for any gas recall, a fundamental feature for a motorcycle with mainly road use.
At 3,500 rpm 80% of the maximum torque is already available, as the revolutions rise the torque value grows decisively and linearly, reaching the peak of 93 Nm at 6,500 rpm. After this threshold, the torque curve gradually decreases, remaining at a value of more than 90% up to 9,000 rpm, at which time the maximum power of 110 hp is delivered.
In road use this results in a high power reserve at each speed, with rapid accelerations at the end of the curve and a reduced use of the gearbox.
The maximum power of 110 hp is fully exploitable on the road without great commitment on the part of the rider who will experience the pleasant feeling of always having full control of the bike.
The engine and injection management systems have been developed to enhance the characteristics of the twin-cylinder, taking into account the type of use of SuperSport. The electronic gas control is precise in transmitting to the engine the demands of the rider followed by a soft and always predictable response, which perfectly supports the versatility of use of supersport.
Frame
The SuperSport 950 is equipped with a slit frame that provides the engine as a structural element of the bike. The main steel bra is connected to the cylinder heads, while the rear saddle frame, also made of steel, is attached to the heads of the cylinders. This configuration allows to have a very compact frame, light and with high torsional rigidity, perfect feature to enhance the dynamic skills of the SuperSport 950. The configuration of the chassis with carrier motor contributes to a weight in running order of 210 kg, 1 kg less than the first SuperSport. The front frame, injection molded, has been completely redesigned as well as the rear direction indicators.
The 1,478 mm range, together with the steering geometry with the 24° row tilt and the 91 mm advance, make the SuperSport 950 handy, light and quick to bend, always ensuring maximum stability on the turn and at speed. From the first approach, these characteristics of SuperSport also contribute to the choice of the 180/55 size of the rear tire, which combines handling and footprint on the ground. The canvas performance is supported by a 48° bend angle, which does not limit the fun on the road and allows its satisfactory use even on the track.
The SuperSport’s control deck features a pair of elegant aluminum forged half-handles mounted above the steering head, which leave the fork adjustment registers on display. The sporty look is guaranteed by the new self-purging radial pumps for front brake and clutch with separate oil tank.
The platform bindings are die-cast in aluminum and mount footrests with a profile design designed to offer maximum grip while driving. On request it is possible to replace the platforms with others covered in rubber, more suitable for urban use. The rider footpegs are complete with aluminum heel para, the passenger ones are directly connected to the rear frame and can be easily removed when you want an even sporty look.
In the saddle there is, in addition to the trousse tools, a convenient waterproof USB socket for charging your mobile phone.
Suspension
As a true Ducati sports car, the SuperSport 950 is equipped with adjustable suspension and single arm swingarm in gravity molten aluminum, which has characteristics of high rigidity and low weight, giving the bike a technical and professional aspect.
The front is equipped with a Marzocchi fork with 43 mm diameter stems, fully adjustable in hydraulics and preload. The rear with a Sachs shock absorber, fixed to the vertical cylinder on one side and the monoarm on the other, with adjustment of the spring preload and hydraulic brake in extension.
The SuperSport 950 S is equipped with refined Öhlins multi-adjustable suspension. At the front there is a fork with 48 mm diameter stems, with TiN treatment for maximum smoothness, and at the rear a Öhlins monoammortizer, fully adjustable, with integrated gas tank.
Cycling equipment from both versions can be completed with the adjustable Öhlins steering shock.
Tires and rims
The SuperSport 950 features three-spoke alloy wheels with a sporty “Y” design in sizes 3.50 x 17 at the front and from 5.50 x 17 to the rear. The rims fit the Pirelli Diablo Rosso® III 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 180/55 ZR 17 at the rear. The Pirelli Diablo Rosso® III maximizes the performance offered by a road tyre. Thanks to its profiles, the latest generation materials, the innovative structure, the bi-compound configuration and the “flash” design of the tread, derived directly from that of the Diablo® Supercorsa, the Pirelli Diablo Rosso® III guarantees remarkable handling, absolute grip and high performance in the wet, while offering long-lasting and constant performance for the entire life cycle of the tyre.
Brembo brakes
The SuperSport 950’s Brembo braking system is typical of sports models for technical content and visual impact. At the front there are Brembo M4-32 single-block radial pliers that act on two 320 mm diameter discs, operated by a Brembo self-purging radial pump with separate tank and adjustable lever. At the rear, the SuperSport 950 is equipped with a 245 mm diameter disc, on which a two-piston caliper works. The braking system is managed by the Bosch Cornering ABS system customizable in the level of intervention.
The Brembo system offers powerful braking and excellent linearity between applied force and braking response, which translates into promptness, modularity and predictability with an excellent feeling at the lever that never puts the driver in difficulty.
Electronics
Electronic controls
The SuperSport 950 is equipped with modern and refined dynamic control electronics, based on the use of Bosch’s 6-axis inertial platform capable of instantly detecting roll angle, yaw and pitching of motion in space.
The SuperSport 950 electronic package consists of:
- ABS Cornering Bosch
- Ducati Traction Control (DTC) EVO
- Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO
- Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) up/down EVO, standard on all versions
The operating parameters of each control are associated by default with the three Riding Modes (Sport, Touring, Urban). The driver is given the opportunity to customize his driving styles and restore the parameters set by Ducati.
ABS Cornering Bosch
The SuperSport 950 is equipped with a Brembo braking system operated by the Bosch 9.1MP ABS with multiple calibration with integrated pressure sensor. The Bosch 9.1 MP ABS prevents wheel locking and prevents rear lifting, ensuring less stop distance and greater stability. The adjustment on 3 levels allows you to switch between levels by selecting the desired Riding Mode to have the optimal setting in any driving condition. Level 1 is recommended for high-grip surfaces, in this configuration the Bosch ABS offers track performance, intervenes only on the front with inactivating cornering functionality and does not involve the activation of the rear anti-lift function; the default level 1 is not paired with any Riding Mode, if the rider wishes it can associate it with the Riding Mode of choice by entering the specific menu. With level 2, bosch ABS is also active on the rear wheel and anti-lift control is enabled. Level 3 corresponds to the highest degree of intervention on rear braking and lifting.
Ducati Traction Control (DTC) EVO
The DTC EVO that equips the SuperSport 950 interfaces with Bosch’s 6-axis inertial platform by measuring the bend angle of the bike at all times and using it to handle more accurately, than a traditional traction control, the intervention necessary to ensure the ideal slippage of the rear tire (based on the level of DTC EVO inserted).
Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO
The Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO that adds to the standard equipment of the SuperSport 950 enhances its sporty soul. This control handles soaring and allows you to achieve maximum acceleration performance with ease and safety. Thanks to the information provided by Bosch’s 6-axis inertial platform, the DWC EVO more accurately detects the presence and extent of the surges and intervenes to control them with a higher level of precision, so as to meet the driver’s demands even more precisely.
Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) up/down EVO
The DQS EVO with up/down function, in addition to minimizing shifting times, allows you to climb without the use of the clutch, ensuring even more effective detaches. The system acts separately for shifting and climbing: in upshift the system intervenes in advance ignition and injection, in downshift it also manages the controlled opening of the butterfly valve, thanks to the integration with full Ride-by-Wire system. The DQS EVO also leverages bend angle information to maximize motion stability during the corner gear shifting phase.
Ducati Riding Mode
The Ducati Riding Mode strategy allows you to choose between different preset modes of engine parameters and electronic controls to adapt the character of the bike to the driving style of the rider and environmental conditions. The SuperSport 950 is equipped with three Riding Modes, called Sport, Touring and Urban. Each of these acts on the Ride-by-Wire electronic system, modifying power and dispensing, the intervention levels of Bosch, DTC, DWC ABS and the activation of the up/down DQS. The change of Riding Mode can be easily carried out while driving acting on the appropriate button, while the customization of the parameters originally associated by Ducati to each Riding Mode can only take place on stationary motorcycles for safety reasons. You can always easily reset the initial settings through the “default” option.
Sport
The Riding Mode Sport allows the SuperSport 950 to express its full potential on the road. The engine delivers 110 hp with a direct response of the Ride-by-Wire to the gas opening, low intervention of the DTC system, level 3, Bosch ABS at level 2, with medium control of rear lift.
Touring
Riding Mode Touring ensures the best balance between performance and comfort. The engine provides full power (110 hp), with a progressive ride-by-wire response to gas opening, average DTC system intervention (level 4) and Bosch ABS at level 3 to ensure maximum braking control and stability.
Urban
Riding Mode Urban is designed for low-grip surfaces. The power is limited to 75 hp with a progressive response of the Ride-by-Wire to the gas opening, the DTC has even more intervention (level 6) while the Bosch ABS maintains the setting at level 3.
On-board electronics
Full-TFT color instrumentation
The SuperSport 950 family instrumentation features a 4.3″‘ full-TFT display. The graphics and interface, inspired by that of the Panigale family, make it easy to navigate the menu, adjust the settings and more immediately identify the selected Riding Mode. The Riding Mode adjustment interface immediately and clearly displays how you are intervening on the settings, thanks to an explanatory graphic of the system on which you are intervening and a graduated scale that indicates whether the change is more oriented towards the performance or safety / stability of the vehicle.
Full-LED projector with bi-function modules
The SuperSport 950 projector is a new full-LED unit, the result of an accurate design study with the aim of strengthening its aesthetic link with the super-sporty Panigale and making the bike immediately recognizable on the roads. The front light is characterized by the DAYTIME Running Light (DRL), which guarantee perfect visibility of the vehicle during the day and, at the same time, thanks to its particular shape, strengthen the family feeling with the Panigale model. The DRL has a refined realization with a little opaline that diffuses light evenly. The projector is completed by two two two-function LED modules for dipped-beam and dazzling that allow the bike to have a symmetrical “look” with lights on. The two modules are embedded in a frame with a brilliant finish that gives this technological component the preciousness of a jewel. The taillight, license plate lights and front direction indicators, integrated into the rear-view mirrors are LED, while the rear lamp ones, replaceable with LED lights available as an accessory.
Ducati Multimedia System (DMS)
The TFT dashboard is designed to display the information of the Ducati Multimedia System (DMS) which, after connecting its smartphone to the bike through Bluetooth technology, allows you to manage some functions through buttons on the handlebars. The “music player” commands, earphone connection status and incoming call warning and received message icons are displayed on the display. The DMS is available throughout the SuperSport 950 range as a Ducati Performance accessory.
